BJJ ja vyökoekäytännöt

You can’t really fairly evaluate someone’s rank in just a few hours. A belt is not just someone’s level in rolling. It’s also knowledge of Jiu-Jitsu, how they treat their team mates, if they are mentally mature for that belt level, if they understand the BJJ code of conduct, mat time, loyalty, competitions etc…

JanneM kirjoitti: Tästä lista suomalaisista BJJ mustista vöistä
Näiden 80 mustavöisen lisäksi Suomessa vakituisesti asuu ainakin Delcio Pereira, Rogerio Rocha ja Thiago Viana. Listan nimistä sen sijaan taas Erno Elgland, Santeri Lilius ja Toni Talvitie asuvat ulkomailla.
Myös Helsingin itsepuolustuskoulun Marko Nyman muutti taannoin Arabiemiraatteihin opettamaan jiu-jitsua.

BJJ ja vyökoekäytännöt

Legendaarisen Australialaisen Machado-BJJ opettajan John B. Willin blogista:
Browning the Purple

I remember being awarded my Brown Belt and thinking ‘I am just not ready for this’. Perhaps I wasn’t, but it wasn’t my choice, it was a decision made by the Machado brothers – and so my fate was sealed.
My personal experience upon receiving new rank is this – you quickly grow into it. And so it was when I received my Brown Belt – back in the mid 90’s – in Los Angeles. I was fortunate beyond imagining, as at that time, we had three of the five Machado brothers all teaching in the same room. Such a wealth and depth of experience – it was hard not to make progress – provided you turned up, strapped your Gi on, and stepped onto the mat.

Now to the thrust of this blog – what happened in my game/ability that prompted my coaches to present me with the new belt? As a Purple Belt, I was starting to develop a technical understanding of not only my personally preferred game but an understanding of the underlying mechanics of any technique they showed me – and I had become a lot clearer on where I liked to be and how I liked to attack – in short, I had developed a ‘game’. But Brown Belt, this was something different.

A Purple Belt becomes a brown, according to the Machado Brothers, when he or she is happy ‘anywhere’ – in other words, a Brown Belt doesn’t have to be in his or her favorite position to have options and the skill to apply them. A brown belt is a happy camper, no matter where they are.

This is a very big jump from Purple Belt – Rigan and Jean Jacques Machado used to tell me that a purple belt was an advanced/seasoned Blue Belt – but a Black Belt is an advanced/seasoned brown belt. Another way to put it is this … a Blue Belt is an apprentice Purple Belt – but a Brown Belt is an apprentice Black Belt.

So my advice, for any caring to take it, is this … purple belts: take time, each and every week, to put yourself into as many positions as you can. Have fun on top, on the bottom, in danger, in every conceivable position – this way you will develop adaptability and confidence. It is easy to feel good when you are imposing your ‘game’ on someone else – it is more challenging to feel good when they are imposing their game on you. To be a brown belt – you need to experience all kinds of ‘weather’.

Best wishes - JBW
